India, a rich country in biodiversity, has 15 ago-climatic zones and over 7000 medicinal plants used in folk and documented systems of medicine. These plants provide livelihood and health security to a large segment of the Indian population. The domestic demand for medicinal plants reached 1,95,000 MT in 2014-2015, while the export demand increased from 345.80 Crore in 2005-06 to 3211 Crore in 2014-15, marking a nine-fold increase in the last decade.
